Today was a beautiful day. We let the chickens out of their yard to forage. They love their scratch and have gotten used to having it when they are out of their yard.
We have to get some light in the shed for them. There are two starting to molt and their egg production has tapered down. We're getting there. I would love to see your set up for winter if you would post. I need and would like to get some ideas.
Just stopping by from Barn Hop...I think we have one chicken molting...but not sure. How would I really tell or if it is truly sick?

ReplyDeleteI looked at some chickens at the Flea this past weekend (from a distance; no touching) they didn't look so good. They looked like they'd been partially plucked. At first thought I wondered if they were sick (that's why I didn't get close) but then; I wondered if they were just molting.
I wouldn't think chickens would molt this close to COLD temps.
How do you know for sure?
Pat
I would love to see your setup for winter once it is done! We don't have chickens yet, but I am hoping to get some in the spring. We are in Maine, so obviously winter is kind of cold for chickens. Although, I have heard that they prefer cold to hot...not sure that as cold as it is here would be preferable though. Are you using the light so they continue to produce through the winter months? Or for heat?
